How do
braces work?

Braces work by gradually straightening your smile through the use of brackets and archwires. Small brackets are attached to the surface of your teeth, connected with a thin metal wire and held in place with elastics. This system creates gentle pressure to align your smile.

In order to progress through treatment, you will come to our practice for regular appointments so your Specialist Orthodontist can make targeted bends in your archwires. These adjustments will help guide your teeth into their optimal positions over time.

common questions about braces

Types of braces we offer.

At Aberdeen Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on offering the latest orthodontic techniques and technologies available. Here are some of the top-quality treatment options we have on offer for our private adult patients:

CLARITY™ ADVANCED CLEAR BRACES
Traditional precision with a subtle look
Clarity™ Advanced braces use the same teeth straightening methods as metal braces - but with one difference. They use clear ceramic brackets that blend in with the colour of your teeth. This makes them perfect for client-facing professionals or anyone looking for a subtler aesthetic.

INVISIBLE BRACES
Virtually invisible - and removable too
Looking to straighten your smile in secret? Invisalign® treatment does exactly that. This treatment option uses a series of clear removable aligners (much like thin sports mouthguards) to gradually straighten your teeth with precision and comfort.

Benefits of braces.

Braces are well-loved by our patients because they:

Braces FAQs.

How much do orthodontic braces cost?

The price of your braces will vary depending on which treatment you have and the duration. Our orthodontic treatment costs give a starting point, and your treatment coordinator will explain all costs with you during your initial assessment, including details of our payment plans.

Will my fixed braces be uncomfortable?

It is likely that you may feel some slight discomfort for a few days each time your braces are adjusted - this is a good sign that the treatment is working! This should ease quite quickly and can be relieved with over-the-counter painkillers.

Can I remove my braces?

One of the benefits of fixed braces is that they cannot be removed until the end of your treatment. This ensures compliance at all times and means we are able to provide accurate timescales for treatment.

Can I eat normally while wearing fixed braces?

Yes, you should be able to eat normally. However, for your orthodontic treatment to work well and in the shortest possible time it is important you take care of your teeth and brace. We recommend avoiding foods like chewing gum and boiled sweets, as well as fizzy drinks and excessive amounts of fruit juice.

How do I brush my teeth while wearing fixed braces?

Brushing may take a little longer when you have a fixed brace, as plaque can easily build up on the teeth around the brackets if they are not carefully cleaned after every meal. Brush your teeth thoroughly three times a day, paying particular attention to where your gums meet your teeth.

Do I still need to see my regular dentist?

Yes, it is important that you still have checkups with your regular dentist throughout your orthodontic treatment so that your teeth can be checked for decay, and kept free of plaque between visits.

What do I do if my brace breaks?

Call us for an appointment as soon as possible. Don’t wait for your next routine appointment, as the breakage may slow your treatment, or may result in damage to your teeth.
